So, the problem here is, when setting controls with certain kinds of Gamecube controller, the game will simply refuse to read any inputs from the L Button, making it impossible to map it to anything (other than the default Shield, of course). The L Button will function properly in any other aspect of the game, including in matches, and also in menus (it can still be used to cycle through a character’s alt. costumes, for example), so the problem isn’t so intrusive to the extent that it makes the game unplayable.
I’ve done some testing with this at a few IRL locals in the NYC area, with a variety of different equipment to work with, and the common denominator with this bug is the controller itself. My controller, and a few other people’s controllers, will simply never have their L Buttons read for the purposes of remapping controls. We were able to test this using the official Nintendo Gamecube Adapter, the Input Integrity, and the Mayflash Adapter (set to WiiU Mode). Controllers that functioned normally continued to function normally on all adapaters, and controllers with the L Button problem continued to have the L Button problem on all adapters. This was also tested on multiple different computer setups across multiple different locals in the NY area, so we can safely rule out a specific setup as being part of the problem.
With all that in mind, I’m led to believe that a specific model of Gamecube controller prompts this bug to occur. My suggestion, in that case, would be to try and see if you can replicate this bug on your end with any of the controllers you have on hand, and then see if you can remove it from the game.
Last thing I want to bring up; while I don’t think it’s related, I do have to mention that my controller is modded, with a capacitor for the Control Stick to help reduce snapback. I don’t know off the top of my head if every players’ controller that had this bug was also modded in some way. I don’t think controller mods would influence the presence of the bug in this case, but I feel like I should cover all of my bases here.
(Also, I don’t have an account here, but this is John Numbers, if you wanted to contact me on Discord for more details.)
I havent had this issue and run a heavily modded controller. do you and the others have a trigger plug in your L by any chance?
